Biography

Dr. Hughes’ research focuses on the ways in which youth, families, and marginalized communities navigate institutional systems, including schools, healthcare, and the growing influence of algorithmic media. In her current work teaching literacy and arts-based research, she engages students in critical examinations of literacy, emphasizing the role of media literacy in interrogating and challenging social inequities. Her critical arts-based research course draws on her cross-disciplinary work in public health and education, where she uses institutional ethnography to investigate the unique health care challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness, including barriers to primary care, substance use services, and mental health supports.
