Katherine Brown-Nakahara
Biography
Katherine Brown-Nakahara is a PhD student and OCT with 29 years of experience as an educator, ESL and FSL specialist and researcher across elementary, secondary, and adult education contexts. Her scholarly work examines inclusive, multimodal, and arts‑integrated approaches to supporting multilingual learners, with a focus on equitable assessment practices in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. An experienced curriculum writer in both French and English, Katherine has contributed to assessment development, including work with EQAO, the OSSLT, and DELF evaluation. Her background includes instructional experience in ESL, literacy, and language acquisition, informing her research on responsive pedagogies for multilingual students. In addition to her educational practice, Katherine is a music educator and active arts practitioner. She has served as an RCM examiner for violin and piano, bringing expertise in performance, creative pedagogy, and arts‑based learning to her academic and professional work. Katherine’s work centers on creating inclusive, culturally sustaining, and enriched learning environments for diverse communities.
